General Guidelines and Information
Participation:
All students, ages 4 – 18 are welcome to participate.
Students will be entered into one of three categories, Elementary level, Intermediate level, or Advanced level, depending on the difficulty of the repertoire. Each category will be broken down into groups of no more than 12 students, by age group. There may be multiple groups in each category depending on the number of entries in the competition.
Students perform one solo piece for two judges in the morning. Due to the recital hall seating capacity, only the top winners will return in the afternoon for an honors recital where awards will be presented and the first place winners will perform. Teachers will be notified by 2pm if they have students that need to return for the honors recital. Honors recital will be available on Facebook Live, for those who would like to watch.
NEW THIS YEAR: VIRTUAL CATEGORY:
Students can submit a performance online to be judged against other online submissions. They will be judged against other online applicants. Applicants should provide access links to a public platforms such as YouTube or Vimeo. Submissions should be emailed to [email protected]. Students may enter the both in-person category as well as the video category. However each entrance will require entrance fee of $25
All students will receive an evaluation, certificate and ribbon for participating. The youngest elementary level (ages 4-5) will all receive a medal and certificate for participation. These participation awards will be given to the teachers after the honors recitals.
Repertoire:
Entries:
A student may enter the competition only 1-2 times per year. One Entrance in person, and one Virtual entrance.
Teachers need to fill out the form for a student’s entry into the competition.
Students’ repertoire must be listed correctly on the form at the time of entry. No changes will be made after the names of the pieces have been turned in to the chairman.
To ensure each student is placed in the correct category, please include a photocopy of the most difficult page of the student’s repertoire. You may also take a picture with your phone and use that photo to upload. The photo or photocopy should have the students name, and name of the piece (hand written in the margin is okay) to ensure we know who the music belongs too. The chairman will examine the difficulty of the submitted pieces and make sure the students are placed in the appropriate category. The categories are based on the difficulty level of the piece the student is playing, as well as their age, not the level they are in in their lesson books.
The entry deadline must be observed. All entries must be received by Feb. 28th, 2023. Teachers will be notified of students scheduled performance times via email one week prior to the competition.
Students play privately for the judges in the competition. No family members or friends are allowed in the room with the judges.
Ratings:
Ratings are Superior, Excellent or Very Good. The judge may also indicate plus (+) or minus (-), providing a total of at least seven possible ratings. Each rating is based on a point system.
Photocopy Rules:
Photocopying of music is illegal.
Students must bring original music for the judge.
