FAQS

How are groups divided and broken up?
  • Students will be entered into one of three categories, Elementary level, Intermediate level, or Advanced level, depending on the difficulty of the repertoire.  Each group is then divided by age where applicable. The goal is to have students competition as closely as they can by level an age.  Sometimes this varies depending on the number of entries we receive.
  •  Each category will be broken down into groups of no more than 12 students, by age group.  There may be multiple groups in each category depending on the number of entries in the competition.

Does Music need to be played from memory?
  • Yes

What is the quality of the pianos?
  • The Piano Gallery provides us the pianos.  They are tuned and ready to play on.  Every piano has a different feel to it.  We will strive to get the best of what is available.  Each competing group will play on the same piano, so we can even out that component of the competition.

Who attends/and plays in the Honors recitals?
  • There is limited space in the recital hall.  Those that will place in the recital, along with their parents, will be invite back to receive their awards.  The 1st place winners will be asked to play their piece.  This year, we will be streaming the recital live on Davis Music Academy Facebook page.

Do you have to be present to win an award?
  • Yes, your student needs to be able to attend the honors recital to place in the competition.  If they are unable to attend the recital, please have them enter the virtual category.

Where do we find our judges?
  • We seek to find judges locally that have experience in judging. Scores can vary between judges.  We keep things consistent, by having the same two judges score each category. They decide together who will place in the categories.

What do we do if a student is not placed in the correct category?
  • We strive to place each student in the best place for them to succeed! However it is not an exact science and sometimes a mistake is made.  When this happens, we ask the judges to inform us, and we work together to score them with the category they belong in.

How do we find out our results?
  • We try have results posted that Saturday at 2pm, so that the students are aware if they need to return to the honors recital.

Where do I get the judging sheets?
  • Teachers are asked to pick them up at the Piano Gallery at the honors recital. This way they can go over them with their students at the next lesson.
